RMS Codec

The RMS Codec is available only through our Japanese partner,
Ontec - O.N. Electronic Co., Ltd.

Highly Compressed Real Time Video
Streambox® RMS codec is a high performance video codec specifically designed for streaming live video over the LAN and Internet. Key features of RMS include individual frame fidelity, very high compression, automatic scaling to fit available bandwidth and high tolerance to frame loss. RMS forms the perfect solution for remote monitoring, video surveillance and IP-based video conferencing.

Frame to Frame Integrity using I-Frame Compression
Remote monitoring, public safety, and surveillance applications require that experts be able to go back and review captured video to find clues and evidence to reconstruct what happened. Good video can make the difference in a secure insurance claim or a conviction that sticks. RMS' interframe compression compresses each frame independent of all other frames so that each frame maintains the desired level of integrity. Unlike H.263, RMS is not subject to spikes in bandwidth demand caused by high motion activity. Its relatively constant bit rate means that critical data won't get lost in bandwidth limited communications lines.

High Compression
Activity monitoring and recording is often required 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Data must be compressed to a high degree in order to make solutions cost effective and allow for backup solutions. RMS provides higher compression that is more scalable the MJPEG. While MJPEG provides excellent image quality it doesn't scale well to lower bit rates. RMS provides image quality that rivals MJPEG while providing for lower bit rate image capture. RMS provides for video files as much as 4 to 6 times smaller than MPEG.

Reliable Transmission over the Internet
Intra-frame compression protocols such as H.263 and MPEG-4 compress frames by recording only the difference between what is in a frame and what is found in another frame. As many as 100 frames might rely on one reference frame (key frame). If the reference frame is lost, then none of the 100 frames can be reconstructed.

A typical Internet connection loses 1% of all packets transmitted, or one in every one hundred frames. An Internet based video stream can easily be subject to one second freezes in transmission for every minute of transmission.

Since RMS does not use intra-frame compression, it is immune to these packet losses and does not exhibit the typical video stream freeze so common to Internet video conferencing.

Scales to Available Bandwidth
MJPEG, H.263 and MPEG-4 and other common encoding schemes require the user to create (and store) multiple bit streams to handle different width communications pipes - one for LAN, one for broadband, and one for dial-up. The result is more processing power and more storage being used.

RMS encodes the entire image in the front end of the bit stream for each frame, adding increasing detail the further down the frame's bit stream you go. RMS retains image integrity throughout. To transmit RMS encoded bit streams on a smaller pipe the system simply throws away the necessary number of bits at the back end of each transmitted frame. A single copy of an RMS encoded video stream can service all communications needs - LAN, broadband, and dial up.

RMS codec is available for licensing for x86(Intel/AMD) or TI based system.
